The Billionaire’s Master Plan: How a Tycoon Orchestrated Grace Kelly’s Royal Marriage

In the year 1956, the world witnessed the union of American actress and Prince Rainier of Monaco.

This event captivated global attention, reminiscent of the fervor surrounding 's marriage to Prince Philip.

However, 's marriage transcended mere romantic ties.

By uniting her affluent family with Monaco's royal lineage, she secured the future prosperity of the small principality.

At the core of this significant event was one man, Aristotle Onassis.

Aristotle Onassis, the billionaire later known for his marriage to Jackie Kennedy, had substantial investments in Monaco post-World War II.

When Monaco faced economic turmoil, Onassis devised a strategy to revitalize the region, viewing Grace Kelly's marriage to the Prince as the pivotal element to restore Monaco's grandeur and wealth – a foresight that proved accurate.

Post-World War II, Monaco encountered economic challenges, posing a predicament for both the principality and Onassis, who had significant stakes in the Casino de Monte Carlo.

To address these financial woes, Onassis conceived an innovative plan.

He envisioned transforming Monaco into a luxurious playground, attracting affluent clientele to mingle with Hollywood elites and movie stars.

Robert Evans, in his book ‘The Fat Lady Sang,' recounted Onassis urging Prince Rainier to secure a bride, emphasizing how the right match could elevate Monaco's tourism akin to the impact of 's coronation on Great Britain.

Following the bankruptcy of Société Monégasque de Banques et de Métaux Précieux in the early 1950s, control shifted to Aristotle Onassis, given that over half of Monaco's wealth was tied to the enterprise overseeing a casino, hotels, and tourist attractions.

Similarly, a considerable portion of Prince Rainier's personal wealth was entwined with this venture before its downfall.

Selecting the future princess of Monaco, even for a diminutive principality, presented a challenging task.

While was initially considered, Grace Kelly emerged as the frontrunner despite initial reservations.

Notably, Robert Evans critiqued Kelly's suitability for the role due to her Hollywood reputation.

In 1955, during the Cannes Film Festival, Grace Kelly received an invitation for a photo session with Prince Rainier at the Royal Palace of Monaco.

Despite a delayed arrival by the prince almost causing Kelly to depart, their meeting transpired, initiating a staged yet blossoming romance, leading to the prince's subsequent visit to America.

Following her encounter with the prince, Grace Kelly returned to star as a princess in the film ‘The Swan.'

The parallels between the movie and Kelly's actual life were striking, from her portrayal of a princess paired with Prince Albert to naming her son Albert.

The film's premiere coincided with her wedding day, amplifying the publicity orchestrated by Aristotle Onassis for both the nuptials and Monaco.

Grace Kelly's father, Jack, a self-made man with a contracting background, navigated the issue of a $2 million dowry demanded by the upon Grace's engagement.

Despite initial reluctance, the dowry was paid, aiding Monaco's financial resurgence.

Allegedly, Grace contributed half of the sum from her inheritance to support the principality without burdening her siblings financially.

The wedding of Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier unfolded as a grand media spectacle, aligning with Aristotle Onassis's vision.

Attended by a plethora of distinguished figures, the event garnered immense media coverage, symbolizing a convergence of American royalty and luminaries, as envisaged by Onassis.

Aristotle Onassis, hailed as the architect behind the royal union, meticulously oversaw the wedding arrangements, positioning himself as a pivotal figure throughout the ceremony.

Despite their shared involvement in Monaco's affairs, Prince Rainier and Onassis harbored conflicting visions for the principality's future, leading to power struggles until Rainier ultimately regained control in 1964.

Prior to his influence in Monaco, Aristotle Onassis had established himself as a prominent figure in international business circles, amassing wealth through endeavors such as the shipping industry.

By leveraging Grace Kelly's marriage, Prince Rainier revitalized Monaco's image, transforming it into a thriving tax haven and premier tourism destination, fulfilling Onassis's prophecy of Monaco's renaissance.
