Frank Sinatra Accused of Womanizing by Gianni Russo
Frank Sinatra and Elvis Presley, both adored by countless women, led lives filled with affairs throughout their successful careers.
But what happens when one of them sleeps with the other's girlfriend?
Tonight, BBC2 will dedicate an entire evening to Old Blue Eyes, showcasing his career and TV appearances.
Apart from being a renowned radio, record, movie, and Rat Pack star, Sinatra was also a major television personality in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
It was during this time that Elvis emerged as the biggest star in the world.
On May 12, 1960, Sinatra celebrated Elvis' return from military service with a special episode of The Frank Sinatra Show.
Elvis managed to find time amidst his busy filming schedule for the movie GI Blues to be a part of the show.
Despite the past animosity between the two, they put on smiles, engaging in friendly banter and even performing medleys of each other's songs.
Just two years earlier, Sinatra had expressed disdain for rock ‘n roll, calling it brutal and degenerate.
However, during the show, he even danced with Elvis.
Little did he know about the secret affair happening behind the scenes.
While filming GI Blues, Elvis engaged in a passionate s**ual relationship with Juliet Prowse, despite leaving his future wife, Priscilla Beaulieu, in Germany and still officially dating starlet Anita Wood in the US.
Prowse, an actress and dancer, had been romantically involved with Sinatra since they met on the set of Can-Can the previous year.
Sinatra was so smitten that he invited her to guest star on his national TV show as a backing singer and serenaded her during performances.
However, in April 1960, Prowse began working with Elvis on GI Blues, where they soon embarked on an affair.
Prowse openly admitted to their relationship at the time and claimed that Sinatra was aware of it.
She stated that both she and Sinatra were mature individuals who didn't conform to teenage notions of steady relationships.
Surprisingly, her affair with Elvis only strengthened her connection with Sinatra.
She even accompanied him during his engagements in Las Vegas and he proposed to her in 1962.
Their relationship eventually fizzled out, with Prowse focusing on her own career.
She later expressed that she had been flattered by the attention but found Elvis to be a complex person who could be difficult, especially after consuming alcohol.
Nevertheless, Sinatra and Elvis became close friends as their careers increasingly overlapped in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
They both headlined lucrative residencies in Las Vegas and Sinatra even made an earnest plea to Elvis, urging him to change his life before it was too late.
He shared his concerns with their mutual friend, Tom Jones.
The friendship between the three stars blossomed as they performed their shows in the casino mecca.
Years later, journalist Chris Hitchens revealed a conversation where Sinatra confessed his attempt to save Elvis.
Sinatra had called Elvis when he was admitted to the hospital in August 1975 due to liver problems exacerbated by drug use.
Worried about his fellow star, Sinatra implored him to take care of himself and stop fooling around.
Tragically, exactly two years later, on August 16, 1977, Elvis passed away at the young age of 42 due to heart failure caused by prolonged drug misuse.
