Tim Allen, best known for his role in the hit TV show Home Improvement, has recently opened up about his time in prison on cocaine charges.
In 1978, Allen was arrested at the Kalamazoo/Battle Creek International Airport in Michigan after a substantial amount of cocaine was found in his luggage.
At the age of 23, he pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges and was sentenced to two years and four months in federal prison.
During an interview on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, Allen discussed the circumstances surrounding his arrest.
He described himself and his friends as “a bunch of college kids who overdid it,” and mentioned that two of them took the fall for the group.
Following his arrest, Allen expressed remorse and reflected on his life during the eight-month period before his sentencing.
He described his life at that time as “terribly stressful.”
When asked about his time in prison, Allen revealed that he adopted a different approach to survive.
He said, “I just shut up and did what I was told.
It was the first time ever I did what I was told and played the game.”
Living day by day became a crucial lesson for him, as he learned how to navigate the prison environment.
He emphasized the importance of learning when to keep quiet, stating, “You definitely want to learn about how to shut up.”
As the months went by, Allen grew accustomed to prison life and even found moments of relative comfort.
He mentioned that Saturdays brought better food, and eventually, he transitioned from a holding cell arrangement to having his own cell.
Despite adapting to his surroundings, Allen couldn't escape the shame he felt about his past actions, particularly his involvement in drunk driving incidents during his college years.
The death of his father in a car crash caused by a drunk driver had a profound impact on him.
In addition to discussing his personal experiences, Allen also touched on his political views.
As a vocal conservative who attended Donald Trump's inauguration in 2016, he expressed his dislike for taxes, stating, “Once I started making money, I had this silent partner [the government] that took almost half of my money and never gave me anything for it.”
Allen described himself as a fiscal conservative who values financial responsibility.
Tim Allen's reflections on his time in prison shed light on the transformative effect it had on his life.
From learning to obey orders to gaining a new perspective on daily living, his experiences serve as a reminder of the importance of personal growth and self-reflection.
