The 2004 romantic drama, The Notebook, directed by Nick Cassavetes, captured the hearts of millions and reignited their belief in love.
Starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams as Noah ‘Duke Calhoun' and Allison ‘Allie' Hamilton, a young couple who fell in love in the 1940s and found their way back to each other years later, the film became an instant classic.
But did you know that Ryan Gosling, the film's lead actor, initially didn't think Rachel McAdams was right for the role?
In a conversation with VH1 in 2014, director Nick Cassavetes revealed that Ryan actually disliked Rachel when they first started working together.
In fact, he even requested another actress to read for Rachel's part after filming had already begun because he felt they lacked chemistry.
Little did he know that their real-life relationship would blossom after the movie's release.
During his interview with VH1, Nick Cassavetes shared, “Maybe I'm not supposed to tell this story, but they (Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams) were really not getting along one day on set.
Really not.”
The director went on to explain that Ryan approached him during a scene with Rachel, asking for her to be replaced so he could have better chemistry with someone else.
He expressed his frustration, saying, “I can't do it with her.
I'm just not getting anything from this.”
According to Nick, tensions between the two escalated to the point where they had a heated argument on set.
Seeking a resolution, the director recalled, “We went into a room with a producer; they started screaming and yelling at each other.
I walked out.
At that point, I was smoking cigarettes.
I smoked a cigarette and everybody came out like, ‘All right, let's do this.'
And it got better after that.
They had it out…”
However, despite their initial difficulties, Nick believes that this confrontation actually strengthened their working relationship.
He stated, “I think Ryan Gosling respected her for standing up for her character, and Rachel McAdams was happy to get that out in the open.
The rest of the film wasn't smooth sailing, but it was smoother sailing.”
Interestingly, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams started dating in 2005, a year after The Notebook was released.
Unfortunately, their relationship came to an end in 2007.
Reflecting on their time together, Ryan expressed his gratitude towards the film, saying, “God bless The Notebook.
It introduced me to one of the great loves of my life.
But people do Rachel and me a disservice by assuming we were anything like the people in that movie.
Rachel and my love story is a hell of a lot more romantic than that.”
Isn't it heartwarming to know that their on-screen love story had a profound impact on their real lives?
