In the midst of the new Whitney Houston biopic, I Wanna Dance with Somebody, a glimpse into her 2000 marijuana incident in Hawaii is revealed.
Here's a breakdown of the events that transpired:
It was on January 11, 2000, when security personnel at Keahole-Kona International Airport on Hawaii's Big Island discovered a quantity of marijuana in Houston's purse, consisting of a half ounce of the substance and three partially-smoked joints.
Surprisingly, despite being 36 years old at the time, both Houston and her husband Bobby Brown managed to avoid immediate arrest.
They proceeded to board a flight to San Francisco, only to be met by awaiting law enforcement upon arrival.
Subsequently, Houston was charged with a misdemeanor related to the possession of marijuana.
Fast forward to March 8, 2001, approximately fourteen months later, when the charge against Houston was ultimately dismissed following an arrangement brokered between her legal counsel and Hawaiian authorities in November of the previous year.
The agreement stipulated that Houston undertake drug rehabilitation as a condition.
Despite this, the ruling in March acknowledged that rehab was not deemed necessary, thereby averting a potential 30-day incarceration and a $1,000 penalty.
Following the legal episode, Houston grappled with substance abuse issues, specifically cocaine and alcohol, prompting multiple stints in rehabilitation facilities.
Tragically, traces of cocaine were detected in her system upon her untimely passing in a hotel bathtub on February 11,
