Actress Winona Ryder has revealed that she faced difficulties in taking care of herself following her breakup with Johnny Depp in 1993.
In an interview with Harper's Bazaar, Ryder compared her state of mind during that time to her character Susanna Kaysen in the film “Girl Interrupted,” who spends 18 months in a psychiatric hospital after a suicide attempt.
Ryder admitted that she struggled to see herself as anything other than a tortured girl, and that she was not taking care of herself properly.
Ryder also shared that Michelle Pfeiffer, her co-star in the movie “Age of Innocence,” reassured her that the tough period would pass, although she couldn't believe it at the time.
The actress, now 50, said that she has rarely talked about this difficult period in her life, as she is a private person.
She acknowledged that it can be hard for younger individuals who grew up with social media to understand the challenges she faced.
In addition to discussing her breakup with Depp, Ryder reflected on the tabloid culture of the early 2000s, describing it as cruel.
She recalled feeling like a part of her life was over during that time.
Ryder made headlines in 2001 when she was caught shoplifting from a department store in Beverly Hills.
She was eventually found guilty of grand theft and vandalism but not guilty of burglary.
Ryder retreated from the public eye after the incident and struggled to find acting opportunities.
Despite the challenges she faced, Ryder eventually made a comeback in her career.
She is now known for her role in the Netflix series “Stranger Things.”
The actress also spoke about her current relationship with fashion designer Scott Mackinlay Hahn, whom she has been with since 2011.
Ryder expressed her love for Hahn and their strong connection, noting that she appreciates the fact that he is not part of the acting world.
She described him as a gentleman who enjoys a low-key lifestyle.
Overall, Ryder emphasized the difficulties she faced during her breakup with Depp and the subsequent tabloid scrutiny she endured.
She opened up about her struggles to take care of herself and the support she received from Pfeiffer.
Ryder also discussed finding love and happiness in her current relationship with Hahn.
Despite the challenges, she has managed to make a successful comeback in her career.
