Since the release of Netflix's hit series “Stranger Things,” Winona Ryder, a beloved icon of the 1990s, has been the talk of the town.
Revivals have become a craze in recent years, with shows like “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life” and “Fuller House” generating immense excitement.
Witnessing a beloved figure rise from obscurity is akin to witnessing Britney Spears' triumphant return.
However, upon examining Ryder's IMDb credits, it becomes apparent that the actress behind “Beetlejuice” and “Heathers” hasn't truly disappeared.
With the exception of 2003 and 2005, Ryder has been involved in at least one project every year since her debut in 1986's “Lucas.”
Granted, these recent projects may not be on par with her beloved '90s classics such as “Girl, Interrupted,” “Bram Stoker's Dracula,” and “Edward Scissorhands.”
They consist of lesser-known titles like “The Dilemma” and “The Iceman,” as well as minor roles in prominent films like “Star Trek” and “Black Swan.”
However, in a candid interview with The Guardian back in 2014, Ryder made it clear that she is content with not pursuing major stardom.
“There's a significant part of me that simply wants to produce good work without the pressure,” she expressed.
“Being a movie star holds no interest for me.”
Ryder admitted to facing challenges when transitioning to adult roles.
Eventually, she took a “hiatus” and relocated to San Francisco to explore interests beyond acting.
“Fame can be incredibly isolating,” she confessed to The Guardian.
“Dangerously so.
And I've definitely experienced that.
There was a time when I would go for a hike without even realizing that I was being photographed.”
Although she needed a break, Ryder now recognizes that her time away from the spotlight trapped her in a '90s time capsule.
Only recently, thanks to her role as Joyce Byers in “Stranger Things,” has she emerged from it.
Tech Insider's Tim Mulkerin hailed the series as one of the best things he's seen all year.
“I took some years off, and I didn't realize how detrimental it would be to my career,” she shared in a recent interview with Time.
“I was constantly advised to keep working to maintain relevance.
When I finally decided to come back, I was left wondering, ‘Oh, where did everyone go?'
