According to the BBC, Los Angeles District Attorney Stephen Cooley assembled a team of eight prosecutors who brought four felony charges against Ryder.

To defend herself, she enlisted the services of renowned defense lawyer Mark Geragos.

However, negotiations for a plea deal failed by late summer of 2002.

The prosecution refused to accept Ryder's not guilty plea to misdemeanor charges, as reported by Joel Mowbray of the National Review.

In addition to the shoplifting charges, Ryder was also accused of using drugs without a valid prescription, including Vicodin, oxycodone, and diazepam.

However, it was later revealed that she had been legitimately prescribed these medications by a doctor for medical purposes.

In December 2002, Ryder received her sentence, which included three years of probation, 480 hours of community service, $3,700 in fines, $6,355 in restitution to the Saks Fifth Avenue store, and a requirement to attend drug and psychological counseling.

Judge Elden Fox of the Superior Court reviewed Ryder's probation report on June 18, 2004, and noted that she had completed the mandated 480 hours of community service.

As a result, the felonies were reduced to misdemeanors.

Finally, in December 2005, Ryder's probation came to an end, marking the close of this challenging chapter in her life.

In an article published in Porter magazine, Ryder shared her candid perspective on the defining moment of her arrest at Saks Fifth Avenue.

Reflecting on her state of mind at the time, the actress, now 52, expressed, “Psychologically, I must have been at a place where I just wanted to stop.

I won't get into what happened, but it wasn't what people think.

And it wasn't like the crime of the century!

But it allowed me time that I really needed, where I went back to San Francisco and got back into things that.

I just had other interests, frankly.”

Despite eventually returning to acting, Ryder faced challenges in regaining the level of fame she had achieved through films like Boys, Reality Bites, and Edward Scissorhands.
