Zayn Malik, the renowned British singer, is set to release his debut solo album this Friday, yet he continues to reflect on his past with the famous boy band, One Direction.
In an exclusive interview with Complex magazine, Malik disclosed the band's stringent regulations aimed at preserving their youthful appearance targeted towards teenage fans.
The singer candidly expressed, “One of the main issues was my beard.
I was compelled to shave it off.
However, as time passed, I defied this rule and chose to maintain it as I felt it distinguished me as older compared to the other band members.
This aspect is now regarded as a positive.
Additionally, I had a desire to experiment with hair dye during my time in the band, but it was prohibited.”
Malik, aged 23, highlighted the struggle of not being able to exhibit his true self as a pivotal factor in his decision to depart from the group last year.
“The underlying issue of not being able to portray my genuine self ultimately led to my departure.
It involved compromising my authenticity and music preferences that initially drew me to this field,” he elaborated.
“This conflict remained unresolved, prompting my exit from the band.”
Emphasizing the importance of authenticity in attaining success, Malik stated, “Authenticity is key to achieving success.
People can discern insincerity.
They yearn for real personalities.
This aspect contributes significantly to Kanye West's triumph.
He fearlessly voices his truths, irrespective of potential backlash.
Such integrity is commendable.”
Despite his departure, Malik expressed gratitude for his time with One Direction, asserting, “I never harbored ingratitude towards the band, even though my frustrations were apparent when discussing my past experiences.
It was a phase I needed to navigate.
Presently, through my music, I can freely express myself, alleviating the creative constraints I once faced.”
Marking his musical journey post-One Direction, Malik's inaugural solo album, titled “Mind of Mine,” is slated for release this upcoming Friday.
